ENAE Business School is in the top 3 leading educational institutions in the Master in International Trade according to the prestigious QS International Trade Rankings.

What are the best masters in Spain? How much does a postgraduate degree cost in our country? Which business schools have the highest graduate employability rate? If you are looking for a higher education and do not know where to start, we show you a very useful tool to find it: The QS Ranking!

Before going deeper into the QS Ranking, you should know that a ranking is an ordered list that classifies elements, people, institutions or objects according to certain criteria.

Thus, in the context of education, a ranking can be used to compare and evaluate universities and business schools; to make decisions about the choice of educational centre or academic programme; or to attract students by increasing the visibility of the entity.

In short, it is a very useful tool for comparing, evaluating and selecting a priori similar training. Although it is not an exact science, and there are many factors involved in determining what, how and where to study, it is a great help.

However, not all rankings are equally rigorous in their development. Therefore, it is important to look to those rankings with the best reputation and transparency. For example, in the field of education we find Forbes, El Mundo or QS, which we will talk about next.

What is the QS Ranking?

The QS Ranking is an annual ranking of universities worldwide. It is one of the most influential rankings in the educational panorama and has been carried out since 1990, although there have been some modifications throughout its history.

Firstly, the acronym QS stands for Quacquarelli Symonds. This is the name of the company created by Nunzio Quacquarelli, which emerged as a student project.

The initial line of business was the publication of career and education guides for international students. These included interviews with leading figures in the business world at the time. As a result, QS was granted office space on the Wharton campus, the first private company to do so.

Subsequently, new services and rankings have been added with 1,500 educational institutions from more than 100 locations around the world. In addition, the criteria for the rankings have been updated to address current relevant issues such as sustainability and graduate employability .

What is the methodology for the QS Rankings?

The QS World University Rankings are carried out by analysing different indicators that reflect the quality and impact of educational institutions. The main criteria for the methodology are as follows:

  • Academic reputation (40%): research excellence.
  • Employer reputation (10%): they select the institutions from which they prefer to hire graduates.
  • Faculty citations (20%): number of times a university's research paper has been cited by other academics.
  • Faculty/student ratio (20%): measures the quality of education and learning at the institution.
  • Internationalisation (10%): counts international students and faculty.

However, as mentioned above, in the latest edition there have been some changes and new indicators have been added:

  • Sustainability (5%): commitment to social and environmental sustainability.
  • Employability outcomes (5%): measures the employability of graduates.
  • International research network (5%): assesses international research collaboration.

Evolution of QS from its foundation to the present day

In 1990, Nunzio Quacquarelli's student project was born while he was finishing his MBA studies. In the same year, TopMBA Career Guide was launched along with research on international MBA recruitment and salaries.

Over the next decade, QS conducts a world tour in London and Paris, including new rankings on preferred business schools for international MBAs and a survey of mindset and aspirations.

Since 2001, new companies and programmes have been added to benefit the student community, such as QS Career Forums and Global Workplace. In addition, new rankings have been added in Asia, Europe, the Americas and Australasia.

QS currently publishes the following rankings, which have a proprietary approach and methodology:

  • QS World University Rankings: global university rankings.

  • QS World University Rankings by subject: global university rankings by academic discipline.

  • QS Regional Rankings: regional university rankings (QS Asian University Ranking and QS Latin American University Ranking).

  • QS Graduate Employability Rankings: global university rankings by graduate employability.

  • QS Higher Education System Strenght Rankings: ranking of higher education systems.

  • QS International Trade Rankings : global ranking of international trade programmes.

QS's look to the future

Although the future is unpredictable, it seems that Quacquarelli Symonds will continue to be a benchmark on the international education scene. Its projection seems unstoppable and, in part, this is due to a process of continuous adaptation.

The methodology used for the rankings has evolved over time to reflect the priorities of today's students. It has therefore recently included new indicators: sustainability, employability and international research.

In addition, the latest edition has 85 new entries , with more than half coming from Asia. Its expansion is on the rise around the world, broadening the perspective and offering a comprehensive view of the educational landscape by looking at key indicators today.
